4.2 Methods of inspection. The same bottles comprising the sample size (see 4.1.1) shall be used for
all tests specified below. The test bottles shall not be included as part of the contract quantity.
4.2.1 Capacity test. The test shall be conducted at a room temperature of 77 ± 5 °F. The bottles shall
be filled with lubricating oil conforming to MIL-PRF-23699 to the transfer bead. The volume of oil used to
fill the bottle shall be measured and recorded. Any battle that does not meet the capacity requirement in
3.1.1 shall be a test failure.
4.2.2 Leakage test. The bottles shall be filled to the transfer bead with oil as specified in 4.2.1 and
cap closure shall be applied hand tight. The bottles shall be tested for leakage by suspending them in an
inverted position for 2 hours at room temperature and then suspended for 4 hours in an oven at 120 ± 10
°F. Any evidence of leakage shall be a test failure.
4.2.3 Pen and pencil marking capability test. The letters and numbers "ABC-123" shall be printed with
both ball point pen and pencil on the blocked in ink areas of the bottles. Lack of adhesion of the pen and
pencil marking to the white ink shall be a test failure.
4.2.4 Legibility after marking test. The ball point pen marking as performed in 4.2.3 shall be given
one firm thumb rub. Illegibility of any letter or number shall be a test failure.
5. PACKAGING
